When
the dust finally settles after the sub-prime
Olympics, we'll find ourselves right back where
we were two years ago. Affordable housing is a
significant National issue, one that's given
short shrift of late given market woes.
Affordable housing is another niche we can
claim as credit unions, especially while other
industry lenders are licking their wounds.
Developing an affordable housing strategy
requires a keen understanding of your
community(s) housing needs, local age, wage and
cultural demographics, relationships with those
that understand the issues and influence
affordable housing decisions.
Many of the seventeen strategies that
precede this one provide the foundation for an
affordable housing
strategy.
That's
why this one is purposefully Number
Eighteen.
By now you've appointed your Housing Czar, or
you're close to doing so. As the Czar is making
connections, establishing relationships and
developing plans, make it understood that
affordable housing is an essential part of your
credit union's long-term housing plan.
